in sickness

—

it is easy to love in health
rosy cheeks and promise

but the in sickness
that trips people up

I don’t mean stuffy noses and wobbly tummys
urgent cares and amoxcillin

I mean that kind of sickness that defies answers
lingers in the cobwebs of our bodies

aches and pains and headaches that steal sight and will to live
insomnia and vomit and anxiety that feels fells like it could ricochette out your throat

the kinds of sickness that last, sometimes until the death do us part
the kind that change you

it could be cancer or chronic
genetic or just the luck of the draw

and it makes both partners feel so helpless
love is not the cure, but it is the support

it’s the bandage while the antibiotic ointment works
love and care and safety, may not heal the body whole
but it sure does cure the soul
