Dominion by Jean Kwok – Book Review

Quick Synopsis – In a world divided into four rival Dominions, power is everything—and Rubi Morningtail has almost none. Three years after the Annihilation destroyed her homeland and shattered her memories, she lives as an Azure refugee in the Dominion of the Silver Tyger, scraping by as a ribbon dancer and hiding her little bit of singing magic. When she wounds a massive battle tyger on her doorstep, she draws the notice of Blake Axefire—supreme metal mage, leader of the royal tyger warriors, and the last man an Azure should trust. His sentence? Cast her into the Bonding, a brutal trial where tygers choose their riders and slaughter the rest. Surviving is unthinkable.

But survive she does. Now she’s stuck on Blake’s elite team racing to reseal the Anchors to the demon realm. With rebels striking, demons rising, and the Dominions at each other’s throats, Rubi must unlock the truth of her magic and her past…while resisting her dangerous attraction to the ruthless warrior who could be her redemption—or her ruin.

Review – This was a fun book, if a little formulaic. Rubi is a refugee in the Silver Tyger Dominion. She and the rest of her people fled the Azure Dragon Dominion when demons slaughtered people at a royal wedding. Now, she eeks out a meager existence in a dominion that hates her people. Rubi is a weak yin magic user and is surprised when Blake Axefire takes an interest in her. When Rubi surprisingly forms a bond with the Tyger Queen, something an Azure shouldn’t be able to do, she is sucked into Blake’s orbit and team. She has to work against the prejudice of others, her weak magic, and her lack of memories.

A lot of this book kind of follows the romance fantasy playbook of the female main character not being enough and being misunderstood. Then there is a third act info dump major reveal dun dun dun. I did like the magic system in this book and I loved that you could tell the different magic users by the colors of their hair. Like the Azures have shades of blue hair and the Tygers have metal colored hair. I thought this was kind of a fun way to quickly tell characters apart. As we learn more about dominions we also learn about how the different dominions have different cultures and political systems. The dominions must work together to defeat the demons and reseal the demon dimension (kind of like KPOP Demon Hunters). Of course, they don’t get along, and each think their magic is superior. Again this is a little formulaic, but if you like this style of book, it won’t bother you.

I didn’t love the romance aspect of this book. It was a little too fast for me, there was no real conversation between the characters until after they get together. I would have liked more positive interaction or even flirtation. It just didn’t really feel like they had a real connection. I did like the book, I think the weaker magic users (yin users) could have been better explained. I will likely read the second in this series, I hope it gets a little more unique though.

Thanks to NetGalley and Putnam for the advanced copy, all opinions are my own.
