Rating – ⭐⭐ out of 5

Review – This book wasn’t for me. I like a thriller that keeps me guessing, but I had the main mystery figured out within the first 10% of the book. While there were some things that kept me guessing, I just wanted there to be more mystery. I also didn’t think the resolution was very satisfying. Yes the mystery is solved and the bad person loses, but I felt like there was so much more of the story that never gets resolved. Also, like most thrillers, everyone needs therapy.

The book takes place in-between Mia in the present day and Iris’s notes from 2015 when the murder of Mia’s cousin and Iris’s son takes place. Mia was 13 when her cousin is murdered and she’s the reason the killer is behind bars. When a podcast starts reporting on the story, Mia is dragged back to the hotel in Austria where it all happened. There so many parts of this story that are little lore drops that don’t really mean anything and are never brought up again. Like some people thought Iris murdered her son because she was a true crime author who was a bit macabre. That tidbit is brought up a ton of times, but it’s never mentioned that she also had a suicide attempt and never wrote anything after her son died. Which is also weird because it’s mentioned that Iris had money problems and she had adopted Mia (Mia’s mom dies of cancer off page and she has no dad), but they weren’t destitute after Tristan dies. So what did they do for money?

I get that this is a thriller/mystery, but I was left with so many questions about the characters and the story. It felt like the author couldn’t make up her mind. We get so many characters and so many pieces of their backstories, but none if it really felt like it came together for me in the end. Also, I kind of hate it when a story is like, is this place haunted? Or is it just black mold?

This wasn’t for me, but if you’re a fan of the author or thrillers in general, you may like it.
