First can I just say I love a historical romance novel that includes queer characters? Because queer people have always existed and normalizing that is something I wish more authors did. Even though Marjorie isn’t queer, she has siblings that are and the acceptance and love in her family is so sweet.
If you like a found family and close proximity trope, then this novel is for you. The Wynchesters are all adopted and are all very different, but so loving towards each other. Marjorie doubts herself a lot because she has limited hearing, though she can read lips, speaks, and has sign language. She still feels like she doesn’t contribute to her families capers, that she’s just a wallflower.
She jumps at the chance to use her substantial art skills to stop a counterfeiting scheme that’s harming lower class people in regency England. She gets more than she’s bargained for when she’s basically locked in a room with Lord Adrian, the man who has been counterfeiting coins for a criminal overlord. Though all is not as it seems. Is Lord Adrian a terrible flirt who regulary jokes about ravishing Marjorie? Yes, and he is slowly wearing Marjorie down as she learns he may not be the rake she thought he was.
I really liked this story, I thought it was cute and had some nice sexy parts. I also enjoyed that the main character had partial hearing loss and how she navigated the world. I’m a sucker for a novel that highlights characters that aren’t hot white people whose biggest flaws are they’re a finance bro.
Definitely I recommend this book for fans of Bridgerton and this is my first 5 star read in awhile.
