Quick Synopsis – Rhya Fleetwood is tired of being a pawn in other people’s wargames. The fledgling wind weaver wants—needs—to master her magic before anything else is taken from her. She’s already lost her friends, her newfound home…will she lose Penn too? There’s no denying the scorching heat between them but, in the aftermath of battle, the Remnant of Fire burns more than anything to rebuild his kingdom and sate his inextinguishable need for revenge.
And he’s not the only one whispering to Rhya across the wind. From the distant island city of Hylios, another voice calls. Another bond pulls. King Soren, Remnant of Water, is as different from Penn as sparks are from mist. The more insight he offers into the magic that binds them together, the more confused Rhya feels—about her future as a Remnant, about her deepest desires, and about her role in the coming war.
Torn between fire and sea, between the king who could break her heart and the king who understands her potential, Rhya will have to finally step into her power…or risk losing it altogether.

Review – This is the second book in a series, so spoilers ahead. First off if you’ve read this and you need to talk to someone about the ending, please message me. I need to scream about it, but don’t want to spoil it. This book reminded me a lot of the Red Rising series and Throne of Glass. I felt like the characters in this book did grow a lot, but I still have issues with Rhya being the most emotionally mature when the other two main characters and love interests are hundreds of years old. Also I want the boyfriends to be boyfriends and everyone to be in love. More why choose novels, please.
This book follows the formula a lot of sequels do, there was a lot more world building and we are starting to see Rhya really come into her own. She works with Soren in this book to develop her powers and ready herself for the war ahead. There was a lot of character building, I felt like the human world and some of the history of the remnants should have been fleshed out a little more. There is a lot of plot development around Rhya and Soren, but not a lot of the plot moving. Though this book definitely sets up an explosive third book. This is supposed to be a trilogy, but I feel like it could easily be fleshed into 4 books instead.
There is so much more room for the history and lore to be built out. For example, once all four remnants are together is that just going to automatically heal the blight? Also, will other fae start getting magic back? I liked this book and I feel like the relationships were fleshed out well, but I would have liked to see more background building. Maybe I need to go back and read the first again to see if I missed something.
Thanks to Netgalley and Berkley Ace for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
