Death at the Door by Olivia Blacke – Book Review

Quick Synopsis – When Ruby discovers the body of a delivery guy at work, the new life she’s been building hangs in the balance. The last time Cordelia dragged Ruby into a murder investigation, it was almost two ghosts living in the apartment, not one. Determined to protect Ruby, Cordelia tries to shield her from the investigation, but Ruby has other ideas. It will take both of them working together to navigate the fine line between the dead and the living to bring a killer to light.

Content Notes – This book is a supernatural murder mystery. There is a murder (duh), drug abuse, drug dealing, dead bodies, and what seems like light stalking.

Rating – ⭐⭐⭐.5 out of 5

Review – This is the second book in the series and I would recommend reading the first. I liked this book, but I found that there were several parts that were repetitive and while the plot moved along, there wasn’t really any character development for Ruby. There was a lot of secondary development like we finally meet Cordelia’s brother and the coworkers at Trendcelerate get a lot of character development. Ruby herself doesn’t really get any development. There was also like no time between the first book and this one. I think like a week or two had passed which just seemed crazy.

The murder mystery it’s self was a good one in my opinion, though it wrapped up really fast. There isn’t really any lead in the case, then bam it’s all linked up super-fast. I will say I genuinely didn’t see the end coming, I would have never guessed the killer on my own. I love it when I can’t solve the mystery right away, I always think it’s kind of boring when you can see the ending a mile away.

I also liked that we got more characters in this book even if they were a little obvious. Like Tosh is a nice character, but clearly, he’s a bad guy. I also liked Ian, Cordelia’s brother. I enjoyed seeing Cordelia’s classification of her brother and then how Ruby perceives him. It kind of makes Cordelia a little of an unreliable narrator. I also like that the coworkers at Trendcelerate make it clear that Cordelia and Adam were not as slick as they thought. And that people warn Ruby about Adam being a bit of a creep.

This is a quick read and if you like murder mystery’s you’ll like this. I will likely keep up with the next book, hopefully it isn’t as repetitive.
