you were sweet once

your name has always burned my tongue
at first you were a good bourbon
sweet smoky fire
i was so drunk on you
that i didn’t realize you were burning me down
that you were scarring me inside and out
even now your name burns my tongue

you’re no longer bourbon
not even that smoky aftertaste
just ash and the memory of burning

i should have known your wicked love could only give me memories
